When she was 15 years old, Bruckner got her first lead part in an independent film Blue Car (2002) in which she played the role of a student at high school who is who was involved in a relationship with her teacher, played by David Strathairn. Roger Ebert noted that Bruckner was able to tackle the complex story with conviction. Bruckner was nominated for the "Best Female Leading Actress" by the Independent Spirit Award. Her family consisted of three siblings and a brother. Hungarian is her first language and she teaches it frequently to stay in the loop. Bruckner is a Hollywood Californian born daughter of her Hungarian father and a Russian mom. Her maternal grandparents are German. Her parents met in Hungary and moved to the U.S. in 1984 through the refugee camp located in Italy. Her siblings include two sisters and a brother.
